Birajhapat
Chinmoy Das
This is a story of long ago. The market town named Anandapur in Medinipur pargana was larger in area than Medinipur town itself.
At that time tusser cloth business was very flourishing. Anandapur was the famous centre of production and business of tusser cloth. Because of that, many rich moneylenders lived in prosperous Anandapur. The source of our discussion is even earlier.
The history is of early 15th century. The town of Chandrakona was then named Mana. Mana was under the king of the Malla dynasty of Bishnupur. A Rajput named Indraketu had occupied Mana.
Indraketu's son Narendra Ketu. Coming from Mana, he established his fort in this Anandapur. The ancient moat of that fort of those days, the tanks, the ruins of the gateway named 'Darjagora' etc. still exist in Anandapur.
There is a folklore that Narendra Ketu's queen worshipped a folk deity named 'Birajhapat'. There is no idol, she worshipped a piece of Makra Pathar (Laterite stone) as a deity. Not goat or sheep, 'Bara' or pig was sacrificed for his sacrifice. And the offering in Puja was liquor.
After Narendra Ketu, his son Chandra Ketu became the king. Chandra Ketu shifted his capital from Anandapur back to Mana. Chandra Ketu renamed Mana after his own name - Chandrakona. However, at the time of shifting the capital, the old queen mother wanted to take her worshipped deity to Chandrakona too.
At that time an unbelievable incident happened. Despite thousands of attempts, it was not possible to lift the ordinary Makra Pathar piece from its altar. Understanding the deity's disapproval, the queen mother wanted to arrange for the deity's worship right here.
But since it was not a Puranic deity, especially because of this inferior method of worship, no Brahmin priest or any other high-caste servitor agreed to take this responsibility. Then the queen handed over the deity to the palanquin bearers of the royal house. Beside the shrine of Birajhapat there is a huge tank. That tank is known as 'Ranigarh'.
The queen mother's palanquin bearers belonged to the Hari community. All families of the Hari community of Anandapur village are known as 'Desh'. From that day till today, the Desh are the authorized worshippers of this deity named Birajhapat.
The priest is also a man of the Hari community. The priest is appointed according to the decision of the 'Desh'. Apart from the priest, there is also a 'Bhokta' belonging to the Hari community, the deity possesses him.
Adjacent to the altar of the deity there is a pit, its name is 'Gambhir'. All the liquor, milk, coconut water poured on the deity's head rolls and accumulates here. As Shital, Murki, Batasa, various fruits and roots are offered. It is a folk belief that worshipping Birajhapat cures all diseases and begets children
The annual main and big Puja of Birajhapat begins on Poush Sankranti tithi. In the Hari locality there is a small shrine of Birajhapat. From there one has to come to the deity's shrine by rolling on the ground doing 'Pranam Seba'.
Reaching the shrine, the priest performs a strange ritual. Before starting the Puja, 'flower placing' is done on the god's head three times consecutively. If the flowers and bel leaves fall off automatically from the goddess's head, it will be understood that he has given permission for the Puja. Otherwise the priest starts pouring absolutely pure country liquor over the idol-stone.
The devotees themselves bring 'Manat liquor' and general 'Pranami liquor'. Some of course offer eye donation, bel leaves, trident. Some also bring ganja chillum to offer.
The priest keeps pouring bottle after bottle of liquor on the deity's head until the flowers and bel leaves fall off. To see this 'flower fall' of Birajhapat, devotees gather from far off villages that day. Anandapur market becomes crowded. Finally when the flower falls, the Puja starts. There is no mantra in Birajhapat's Puja. The priest worships by chanting Guru mantra.
After the Puja, sacrifice is offered. First, one Bara (pig) and one goat are sacrificed by the Desh committee. Then comes the turn of other devotees to fulfil their vows. First goats, then Bara and finally rooster sacrifice. Twenty to fifty goats are sacrificed. More than two hundred and fifty roosters. There are 3 Khara (sacrificial swords) of different sizes for this. There is a specific blacksmith for sacrifice.
After the sacrifice ritual is over, the head of the sacrificed animal of the Desh is removed and the cut meat is mixed with Atop rice and cooked as Bhog. After offering the Bhog to the deity, that Bhog is distributed as Prasad in Sal-leaf plates to the assembled devotees and spectators. There is a scramble among the devotees for this Prasad. It is called ‘Gonjobhog’. After Ganjabhog, flowers are again placed on the deity's head.
Apart from all families of the Hari community, there is a custom of sharing the sacrificial meat with the priest, the Bhokta, the sacrificial blacksmith, the chief of the Desh, the ‘Deka’ (who does the work of ‘calling’ throughout the year).
After Gonjabhog, the beating of Dhol-Sanai-Kansai begins. And along with that, wild dance. The drinking of Prasadi liquor begins. The vermilion smeared on the deity's head, liquor, milk, coconut water all mix together and accumulate inside the pit named ‘Gambhir’. The priest lifts it, fills it in earthen cups and passes it from hand to hand to everyone. Making the sky and air reverberate with the deity's victory chant, the devotees continue to drink that Prasad. With loud sound of Dhol-Sanai, the wild dance continues.
A festival comparable to such Puja of Birajhapat is rarely seen.
