First Ekadashi tithi of the month of Bhadra. Bheem is worshipped all over Medinipur.
The eldest of the five Pandavas is Yudhishthira. He who is the most virtuous, is not worshipped anywhere. Worshipped is the fierce, mighty hero Bheem! This is indeed a matter of great curiosity.
In South Bengal, Bheem Puja is widely prevalent throughout Medinipur district. Of course, it is also prevalent in Bankura adjoining Medinipur and in the south, in Mayurbhanj, Baleshwar, Baripada districts of Odisha.
The consistency seen in this Puja everywhere is that - everywhere there is a standing, huge idol of Bheem. Generally, idols are not less than 8-10 feet high. Again, huge idols of 15 or 20 feet are also made in some places.
There is no altar for Bheem Thakur's idol. And the idol is made directly at the place of worship. The idol wears clothing up to the knees. Armour on the muscular upper arms. A mace in the right hand. Left hand on the waist. Huge round eyeballs. Earrings, long sideburns, and equally huge mustache. Nagra shoes on feet. Curly hair on head. Body colour reddish yellow or reddish brown.Potters, patuas or ordinary clay artists make his idol.
In most areas, it is a single and standing idol of Bheem. However, idols of Keechak Vadha, or talking with Hidimba, are also made in one or two places. Whether in Mahabharata or in the Puja idol, everywhere we see the hugely powerful Bheem.
There are some stories about the reason for Bheem being extra powerful among the five brothers. Because once King Pandu shot an arrow at a sage in the form of a deer engaged in lovemaking, by the sage's curse, he had no power to beget children. Then at her husband's request, Kunti Devi obtained Yudhishthira from Dharma by the boon of Durvasa Muni.
Later, at Pandu's own wish, when Kunti Devi invoked Vayu for a powerful son, Vayu came riding a deer. When asked what her prayer was, Kunti expressed her desire for a powerful son. Then from Vayu's semen, the mighty-armed, Bheem-like powerful, voracious Bheem was born.
At the moment of his birth, there was a divine voice, this boy will be more powerful than all powerful persons in the world. Proof of Bheem's power was also obtained immediately. Hearing the divine voice, Kunti was startled and the extremely heavy child fell from her lap to the ground. When mother Kunti screamed in panic, the opposite picture was seen. The newborn was not harmed at all, on the contrary, the stone on the ground was shattered to pieces by the pressure of his body.
However, Bheemsen's idols are mostly built in empty fields or open spaces by the roadside. However, it is also seen that Bheem's idol has been made at the junction of three-four field boundaries in crop fields. But in that exceptional idol, no mace is seen in his hand. There, a plough is seen on his shoulder.
In Rameshwar Bhattacharya's 'Shivayan' poem too, Bheem is Shiva's follower, the ploughman. About Bheem, such description is there - "In this way every night passes. Bheem eats, and in the morning yokes the plough."But not as a farmer, the farmer society worships him as the 'Kshetrapal deity'.
There are many arguments in favour of calling Bheem as Kshetrapal. 1. Kshetrapal protects the farmer's crop field. Bheem is also imagined in that thought here. 2. Like Bheem, the idol of Kshetrapal also has a mace. With the help of that weapon, he does the work of field protection. In Kolkata's Ashutosh Museum, there is an ancient stone idol of Kshetrapal with a mace in hand. 3. In our ancient scriptures, the mace-bearing Kshetrapal is the 'protector of directions' deity. There is no difficulty in calling the mighty Bheem as 'protector of fields' too. 4. Kshetrapal is Shiva's follower, so is Bheem. In 'Shivayan' poem, Shiva is the crest-jewel of farmers and there Bheem is his chief follower. 5. Sugarcane cultivators worship a Kshetrapal deity named 'Pondasur', he is the deity of sugarcane cultivation. Bheem is also the protector of agriculture.
Another characteristic of Bheem's Puja is, generally his Puja is not done anywhere on personal or family initiative. Everywhere it is organized universally on the initiative of the village or village committee. There is no discrimination of high and low. Hindus of all levels participate in this Puja.
However, in all Pujas, the priest is a Brahmin. In Bheem's Puja, along with the usual offerings, a boiled red sweet potato and saltless soaked moong must be offered to him.
It is only a one-night Puja. In many areas, a fair is organized on that occasion. And everyone participates in it eagerly. This is the only Puja where invocation and immersion are in the same seat.
There is a special ritual in Bheem's Puja. Puja starts by establishing the pot, at the time of immersion the priest has to overturn the pot and leave. Nowhere is Bheem's idol immersed.
In Anandpur and Nutan Bazar villages of Keshpur police station, a powerful man named 'Bhan Singh' like Hercules is worshipped and a fair is held. Worship of Bhan Singh is prevalent with the desire to be as powerful as him. Some researchers assume Bhan Singh to be the base of Bheem.
Since he is the protector of crops, from the idea of the protector's might, our farmer society has placed the middle Pandava Bheem himself on the seat of deity.
