Bhairav Bhumi

The expanse of western Rarh extends up to the Chhotanagpur hilly area. Shilda is located in this plateau region. Its ancient original name was Jhatibani, it was also a pargana of that time.

Long ago, there was once a Nishad kingdom of Dom caste there. In Domgarh its ruins still exist. It is heard that some Rajput hero on his way to Puri Dham defeated the Dom king and occupied this kingdom. But its exact place or time or person cannot be recovered now.

In 1787, the Government of the East India Company had sent an official letter containing many questions to the king of Shilda. The zamindar of Shilda was then Raja Mangovinda Mallaray. Some history of Shilda is known from the reply he gave to the Collector of Medinipur.

Mango Govinda's great-grandfather was Medini Mallaray. Defeating the then king of Shilda, Vijay Singh, he founded a new dynasty in Shilda. But which ancestor of Vijay Singh first came here, or which Dom king was in power here that day, those stories were not found in that reply letter.

However, after ruling for 41 years and after Medini's death, his son Mangal Raj ruled for 57 years. His son Gourhari ruled for 67 years. Gourhari's son, the aforementioned Mangovinda, was the last king of the Malla dynasty. In 1803 he died childless.

Mango Govinda had seven queens. One of them, Kishorimani Devi, then took charge of managing the zamindari. But after Kishorimani's death, her adopted son Srinath Chandra could not manage the zamindari without hindrance. He had to get involved in lawsuits with Mangovinda's grandsons over property rights. Gradually, auctioned for debt, the zamindari of the Malla dynasty ended. Medinipur Zamindari Company took over Shilda.

There is a reason to tell this history in detail. During the Malla dynasty, Shilda state had greatly developed. Especially Rani Kishorimani was illustrious. Many of her achievements had enriched Shilda, and many legends had grown among the common subjects about her. Historians called this Rani as ‘Raja’. Even now those stories are spread among people.

The Malla kings built a fort-house in Shilda. It spreads over a large area. A huge Nahabat Khana on top of the huge gateway. Elephant stable, horse stable. In front of the gateway, a beautiful, decorated Rasa Mancha is there.

Many temples inside and outside the palace. Rani Kishorimani herself also established temples. Inside the boundary of the palace itself, she built a temple in 1820. She excavated a huge water reservoir to alleviate the water scarcity of the subjects. Standing in front of that 'Shilda Bandh', even today one feels wonder.

A more ancient name of Shilda or Jhatibani is 'Saontabhumi' or 'Santbhum'. This name is mentioned orally or in the writings of village poets. In Santbhum resides the god Sri Bhairav. To destroy the sins and oppressions of Koli. The name is so because it is the 'habitat of the Santhals'.

From the Santhals' own mythology, it is known that traveling through many countries from North India, they came to this country. They settled in the forest areas of Shilda, Dhalbhumgarh, Ghatshila.

The sole deity of this vast Saontabhumi is Baba Bhairav. His location is in the vast plain of Odgonda, adjacent to Shilda's palace. Once there was a huge stone temple of his.

Beside it is also the temple of his Bhairavi. Goddess Rankini is his Bhairavi. Who after being defeated in a fight with Pir Lohani Saheb in Kharagpur, had taken shelter in Ghatshila. Giving her shelter, Dhopa there, by her grace, established the Dhalbhumgarh kingdom. All these legends are well known.

Rankini is also in Chilkigarh. Those who in course of time also got the zamindari of Ghatshila, this Rankini is the family deity of those kings of Jamboni. Rankini's temple is deep in dense forest at the bend of the fast-flowing hilly Dulung river. Once human sacrifice was done in front of this goddess. That is why the goddess is located in dense forest.

However, in Shilda, Goddess Dashabhuja is worshipped for a fortnight. In the morning of Navami tithi of Jitastami Jagaran, Kalparambha. Puja continues till Vijaya Dashami. That day is the day of union of Bhairav and Bhairavi. The goddess comes to Shilda from Ghatshila. For her travel, there is an underground tunnel from a hill in Ghatshila to Shilda.

Bhairav also becomes restless and starts pacing. Smoke emanates from his idol's mouth. Sweat beads appear all over the idol's body. A deep rumbling sound comes up through the earth. With the desire to pacify Mahakal Bhairav, conch shells are blown house to house in the surrounding villages.

For a fortnight, the caste Hindus worship Dashabhuja. But on the day of Ekadashi, the Santhal tribals take possession of 'Bhairav Maro'. In some ancient past, the Diku caste Hindus had driven out their 'Raja Hudud Durga' and taken possession of the area. To declare jihad against it, even now every year they regularly gather in front of the deity. They celebrate.

And dance - Pata dance, Chhau dance and Bhuang dance. These are actually war dances - symbolic dances of protest against injustice.

With the blow of time, the temples of Bhairav and Rankini of Shilda are now razed to the ground. Only two Tri-ratha foundation altars remain standing. Even today, on top of them, Baba Bhairav and his seven Dakini terracotta idols are established in their own glory. Every year on Shukla Ekadashi, the indigenous people gather in front of him. And along with that, there is a huge 'Patabidha' fair. Mainly Adibasis attend thar fair.

You may attend the fair at least once in your lifetime.
