Aikhan Din
Chinmoy Das
"Auri Bauri Makar Dub." Makar means Poush Sankranti and taking a dip bath in some water body. The very next day is 'Aikhan', the first day of the month of Magh. A very auspicious day in the general peasant society.
An auspicious moment to start rituals like Vastu Sanskar, Go Sanskar, Hal Punyaho etc. This day is a very sacred day for the farmers of the Kurmi (Mahato) community.
The agricultural work for the next year begins on this day. As a symbol of it, every farmer starts the work of ploughing his own field on this day. The work is so enthusiastic for this community that Aikhan Din takes the form of a festival in their society.
Farmers of all castes in the eastern part of Medinipur district, i.e., Tamluk, Kanthi area, also use Aikhan Day as the beginning of agriculture. However, there is not much prevalence of any festival or enthusiasm on this date there.
Of course, many do the initiation of ploughing on this day. They are seen finishing the work of first ploughing in the field. The way nominal ploughing is done in the field, it is understood later that it has been done merely for the sake of maintaining the rule. It is called 'Aghuya Chira' in that region. It can be assumed that such naming is because the soil is ‘ploughed beforehand'.
Almost in the entire Rarh region, the day is considered as 'Aikhan Din' and a day of festival. In different areas, different people worship various folk deities. Everyone participates in it by playing dhak, dhol, madol, kansi, sacrificing goats, sheep, pigs, cocks, dancing and singing.
More than gods, worship of 'evil spirits' is seen more on that day. Just as Alakshmi Biday is organized in the early morning of Diwali night in the eastern part of the district, similar arrangements are also seen in the western areas.
The tribal society counts the new year from Aikhan Day. In ancient times, 1st Magh was the New Year. In the book 'Puja Parban', there is a trace of this calculation. There, respected Sir Yogesh Chandra Roy Vidyanidhi had said: 'Sixteen hundred years ago, Uttarayana started on the day of Poush Sankranti. The next day, 1st Magh, is the first day of the new year. ... We are considering 1st Baisakh as the new year, but this custom is not very old.'
At present, although 1st Baisakh is recognized as the New Year, the tribal society still follows and respects the ancient custom. There are many strange customs centered around Aikhan in different areas.
On the night before Sankranti, after all household work is over, the housewife ties a knot with a bunch of jute or dry straw in trunks, suitcases, almirahs, etc. On the morning of Aikhan Day, at the time of bathing, knots have to be opened and floated in water.
All the garbage in the courtyard and its surroundings has to be swept and piled up and set on fire.
Brass utensils are cleaned and made sparkling. Some well-to-do householders again throw away old earthen pots on that day. With new pots, their new year's life begins.
Well-to-do families look at their faces in brass mirrors after bathing. It is mainly an agriculture-based ritual.
Therefore, apart from ploughing the field, some other rituals are also seen to be observed. 1. Cow dung manure is given to all paddy and vegetable fields. 2. Soil has to be newly piled at the base of bamboo groves. 3. Dry leaves have to be cut and trimmed in banana groves. 4. Cows are bathed. Oil is applied to their horns and hooves. 5. Some others feed cows by grinding together 9 things - neem leaves, raw turmeric, garlic, tamarind, keu, ginger, ol, kankurnari and wild mustard - as a preventive for diseases.
Aikhan is also a date for hunting. The kings of Mallabhum Bishnupur also used to go for 'Aikhan Shikar' with great pomp. Kurmis, tribals, lower-class Hindus, even by setting traps, hunt birds on that day. Because, there is a rule of eating meat on that day throughout the vast region of Rarh.
In later times, instead of 1st Magh, 1st Baisakh started to be considered and counted as the New Year. Since then, a section of upper-caste Hindus, considering that date as Aikhan Day, have been observing all rituals on 1st Baisakh itself.
But even today, throughout a vast area of Rarh, the ancient tradition is followed. 1st Magh is still their ‘Aikhan Day.’
