Akash Pradip - The Sky Lamp

Ashwin Sankranti. The last day of autumn. On that day, every Bengali household is busy lighting the Akash Pradip. A light is kept burning all night on top of a tall wooden pole or bamboo. For Bengalis, the solar month of Kartik is this 'month of keeping the light on'.

In ancient times, this ritual of lighting the lamp was followed as a very sacred and obligatory custom. On the evening before the solar month of Kartik, a tree was worshipped by a Brahmin priest. In it, Lakshmi-Damodar was worshipped.

In the Smriti collection named 'Apararka', the mantra for offering the sky lamp is also recorded. Its meaning is like this - 'In the month of Kartik, I offer this lamp in the sky to Damodar along with Lakshmi. Salutations to Bodha Ananta.'

Here Damodar is Narayana, or Lord Vishnu. He sustains all living beings on earth. His authority remains even after death. He is the doer of welfare for the living world. Therefore, this tradition of lighting the lamp is for the satisfaction of Vishnu.

There is also another different belief. On Mahalaya, at the beginning of Devi Paksha, Tarpan is offered to the ancestors. From that day, for a month, they descend to earth to bless their descendants and to do good. On the next Kartik Amavasya, the day Kali Puja is organized, after the puja is over, it is time for them to return to the other world. The arrangement of Akash Bati is to show them light on that long journey.

However, in Hemadri's 'Adi Purana', there is a specific rule for offering Akash Pradip. It is like this - Near the house, a pole of the height of a man should be planted with any sacrificial wood, and a hole of the measure of a barley finger should be made in it. In that hole, a plank of two hands' measure should be fitted. On that plank, a four-cornered, eight-petalled cornice should be hung, and a light should be lit inside it. The rule is, ghee or sesame oil should be given in the lamp.

All these, of course, are ancient injunctions. The customs of today are somewhat different. The custom of lighting a lamp in the sky is still observed. However, the injunctions and rituals are not followed so strictly.

No sacrificial wood has been used for a long time. Until some time ago, it was seen that householders planted a tall bamboo beside the house. Keeping a twig of one span at the very tip of the bamboo, the rest of the bamboo is trimmed. With 'two and a half twists' on that twig, a hook or ring is made.

Passing a rope through it, a light is lit inside an eight-pala lantern and hung.In very recent times, the arrangements have become more modern. At the very top of the bamboo, a 'kampiya' (in the shape of English 'V') made of twig (also made of wood) is tied. The rope is hung from it. That rope is tied around the neck of a new earthen pot.

For this, pots are specially made in the potters' locality. On the upper side of the pot, there are some holes for air circulation. A large lamp is lit and placed inside the pot. Enough oil is given in the lamp to burn all night.

The mouth of the pot is covered with a new earthen lid. Then the pot with the lamp is pulled up by the rope and fixed at the top of the bamboo. However, it has to be taken down before sunrise the next day. Nowadays, many families have started lighting electric bulbs instead of lamps.

The lighting of the lamp starts from the evening of 'Jala Bishuba Sankranti' or Ashwin Sankranti. It extends till 'Shadashiti Sankranti' or Kartik Sankranti. Throughout the month of Kartik, this Akash Pradip is lit every evening.

The common people believe that the gods residing in the sky will be pleased by this. And they will keep an eye so that evil and harmful evil forces cannot harm the family. At the same time, another purpose is to illuminate the journey of the ancestors returning to the afterlife. For these two wishes, the arrangement of the sky lamp is made.
