Birinchi Vandana

In the western basin of Rupnarayan in Purba Medinipur, there are a few nearby villages. The abode of a distinct deity named 'Birinchi' is in that area. Within Tamluk sub-division only.

He exists only in a handful of villages. Saihra, Joykrishnapur, Mirzapur and Parbatipur under Tamluk PS. And Barh Uttar Hingli village under Sutahata PS. However, survey has shown, in these villages the deity resides only in middle-class Brahmin families.

In Bengali dictionary, 'Birinchi' means Brahma, Vishnu, Mahadev – all three names are mentioned. In Kathasaritsagara (7.34) he is mentioned as 'Lokabirachayita', as Brahma. That is, he is considered as the Creator.

However, there is some variation in making his symbol area-wise. In front of the house in the courtyard his idol is made. On flat land his abstract symbol is made with clay or raw cow-dung. This symbol looks like the Gauri-patta of Shivalinga.

Beside this Gauri-patta, a baby crocodile is made. Both are decorated with ripe Gunja (kunch) fruits. Such is in Sutahata. The idol in Joykrishnapur has a little difference. There two small human figures are made on two sides of Birinchi's symbol. These two are decorated with kunch fruits. But for Birinchi's symbol, besides kunch, haritaki is also used for decoration.

Again the idol of Parbatipur is quite strange. There it is not Gauri-patta, Birinchi's symbol is like an elephant's trunk. With a shark-like tail. Looks somewhat like Basubaldev. He is the vehicle of Birinchi. With him seven-eight round clay balls. These are symbols of Ashta Vasu.

Slight variation is seen in Mirzapur's idol. There not Basubaldev, a horse figure is made as vehicle of Birinchi.

The village we surveyed is named Saira. A village hugging Rupnarayan. To the east of the village is a huge high river embankment, from Kolaghat to Tamluk. At the bends, the lash of current falls right at the base of the embankment. In just a few years this river has swallowed a whole mouza named Sawadighi. Now it has come to the doorstep of Saihra.

In Chakrabarty family of this Saira village, worship of Birinchi Dev has been going on for long. Here a round mound is made as symbol of the deity's head. Surrounding that mound are fourteen figures. One human figure on the left side of the deity. Fourteen figures are sons of Birinchi Dev. And the figure on the left is his vehicle. His name is 'Basuballabha' or Chatiraj.

The way of decorating these three types of symbols is also different. As main deity, a haritaki is placed vertically on the mound, that is probably the nose. Two kauries on two sides of haritaki, they are the deity's eyes. The mound is decorated with many kunch fruits. These are symbols of the reddish glow of the sun. Fourteen figures have decoration of kunch fruits.

And while decorating Basuballabha, one haritaki each is placed vertically on the head and on the groin. As his eyes, two cowries just below the head, and kunch decoration all over the body.

At the time of survey Smt. Shantilata Devi and other members of Chakrabarty family informed – not Brahma, Vishnu or Maheshwar, Birinchi Dev is worshipped as symbol of Sun. He is the source and sustainer of all life. That is why indication of his rays with kunch fruits. Elsewhere again construction of horse figure as his vehicle. The idol is made by a married woman of the family.

Puja is held on every Sunday of the month of Poush. The raw milk poured on Birinchi's head at the time of puja gets collected in a pit in front of the idol. At the end of puja, the women observing the vow lift it and drink. On the last day of puja, women offer trays decorated with offerings for fulfillment of wishes. Barren women participate in puja hoping for child. Mothers with children also participate praying for protection of child and freedom from all diseases.

Birinchi deity is worshipped as symbol of Sun. Analyzing Birinchi's idol and decoration, sociologists say, it is an example of 'Fertility Cult'. As the lord of creation, the votaries worship Surya Dev.

Shantilata Devi's remark – "He himself is the Vidhata Purush.
